I am in Hong Kong, standing between towering glass facades. There are sounds all around me; neon lights are blinking, air-conditioners humming, cars sounding their horns and people talking. Hong Kong is one big, dynamic organism; always alive. The reflections in the glass add to this perception. Day and night don’t exist here; day is night, and vice versa. I can’t escape it and that’s confronting. We don’t have anything like this in The Netherlands: at least, we have a choice between the hustle and bustle or peace and quiet.
My object ‘Happy’ shows activity, dynamics when it’s no longer there. This has an alienating effect, showing dynamics as beauty. During the day the world is busy and full of traffic. This fades away at night, however Happy’s surfaces keep showing the daytime dynamics by means of moving images. The object will have to stand near a busy traffic junction anywhere in the world. It will a give a new meaning to busy traffic – even turning it into an object of beauty!
